TRACK 13 I wish that I could have hung out at the studio when these songs were recorded, because it must have been one hell of a dusk till dawn party. The sleeve notes call this album "the missing link in the Lee Perry legacy", and it's quite a link. "Ashes & Dust" and "In This Iwa" are pure midnight magic, while "Bionic Rats" and "When You Walk" are first rate groovers. "Track 13" is really interesting: nobody knows what it's called! Heartbeat only had a fragment of the master tape to work with, and it was probably dug out of Lee Perry's garden or something crazy like that, so it wasn't identified at all. When I first heard this album, I thought it was vintage Studio One Perry material; however, it's actually a late 1980s recording that Perry did with Coxsone Dodd, singing over 1960s Studio One rhythms, which gives it a deceptively "classic" sound. It's also interesting that Perry would reunite with Coxsone Dodd after all these years (see the biography). Killer tracks include the opening "Welcome Aboard", the ranting and raving "Don't Blame The Baldhead", a song aimed at Rastas who blame clean shaven Jamaicans for petty crimes, and the appropriately named "Holla And Bawl". TIME MARCHES ON This album has a very slow craziness to it, sounding like it was recorded on a rainy long weekend, and it lacks the energy of most of Perry's other albums. Worth owning of course, but not absolutely vital. Perry really layers his vocals on some of the tracks ("Introducing Myself", "Drum Song", "Grooving") resulting in a stream of (un)consciousness word salad that's like hearing two or three songs at once. A couple of killers are "Drum Song", which sounds like what a blurred film looks like, and "I Am A Madman", in which Perry discusses his (alleged) insanity. SEVEN DEVILS DEAD In a very close tie with Time Boom X De Devil Dead (see below), this is Lee Perry's greatest album - a freakin' masterpiece! From start to finish it's absolutely killer, containing some of his finest moments such as the autobiographical "African Hitchiker", the rocking "I Got The Groove" (was there ever any doubt?), and the epic "Seven Devils Dead". The deadly opener, "Secret Laboratory", has one of his greatest couplets: "rocking & reeling, having a ball / rocking & reeling, straight jacket and all" - another self-reflexive comment on his (alleged) insanity. He's also helped out by English dub king Adrian Sherwood on production, an absolutely dynamite collaboration. TIME BOOM X DE DEVIL DEAD - Lee Perry & The Dub Syndicate On U Sound ON-UCD43 1. NIGHT TRAIN This gets my vote for being Lee Perry's best album, or at least my personal favorite. It's fantastic! From start to finish, there are no weak tracks, and the collaboration between Perry and Adrian Sherwood is out of sight. Pointing out the killer tracks is redundant: they're all killers! Along with Secret Laboratory, Time Boom is an absolute must for any Lee Perry fan. Kiss the champion. LORD GOD MUZICK Heartbeat CDHB65 1. FREE US; 2. COLT THE GAME; 3. LIGHTNING AND THUNDERLASH; 4. LEE IN THE HEARTBEAT When this album is good ("Free Us", "Lightning & Thunderflash", "Happy Birthday Marcus") it's great, when it's not ("Hot Shit", "Supersonic Man") it's still pretty good, with occasional lapses into not bad. Killer tracks include the breakneck "Free Us" and "Lee The Upsetter", which features terrific sampling from Perry's 1967 "I Am The Upsetter", and "Happy Birthday Marcus", which concludes with a round of zany barnyard impersonations. The main fault of this album (if there is one) is Perry's repetitive use of the "Free Us" rhythm and the lack of the usual arrangements from outer space. MYSTIC MIRACLE STAR - Lee Perry & The Majestics Heartbeat CDHB06 1. HOLY MOSES; 2. GOD BLESS PICKNEY; 3. RADICATION SQUAD; 4. MYSTIC MIRACLE STAR; 5. CHALICE A FIRE; 6. PUSSY I COCKY I WATER; 7. MUSIC BREEZE Okay, so Lee Perry can't walk on water. This album proves it! However, it's worth owning just for the raucous "Holy Moses". The rest of it? I defy even the most die-hard Perry fan to include the 12 minute "Radication Squad" on a walkman tape... CHICKEN SCRATCH Heartbeat CDHB53 1. PLEASE DON'T GO; 2. CHICKEN SCRATCH; 3. PUSS IN BAG Even before he went over the edge in the late 1970s, Lee Perry had the groove. Chicken Scratch gathers together all of Perry's first Ska recordings for Coxsone Dodd, and features backing by the legendary Skatalites, along with the Wailers and Rita Marley's first combo, The Soulettes. It's a great collection of Ska stompers, but it certainly lacks the craziness that most of us know and love Lee Perry for. Thankfully, it leaves out Perry's worst song from the era, "Doctor Dick" (need I say more?) MYSTIC WARRIOR - Lee Perry & Mad Professor RAS ARICD054 SUPER APE INNA JUNGLE - Lee Perry & Mad Professor RAS ARICD112 BLACK ARK EXPERRYMENTS - Lee Perry & Mad Professor RAS ARICD114 EXPERRYMENTS AT THE GRASS ROOTS OF DUB - Lee Perry & Mad Professor RAS ARICD 115 Personally, I think Mad Professor is over-rated. I'm sure the way that these albums came about is that one day some leg breakers came knocking on Mad Professor's door to collect on some bad racetrack debts; "Let me make a couple of phone calls!" he says. So he rings up Lee Perry and says "I need some dosh! Have you got any studio out-takes laying around in your kitchen? You know: barnyard impressions, sound check dialogue with the engineer, that kinda jazz? You do? Swell! I've got some leftover dub tracks sitting in the garage, so let me slap your crap on my crap, I'll put both of our names on it, and, you know: CHA-CHING (cash register sound FX)"! To be fair, these collections aren't bad (except for the dreadful Super Ape Inna Jungle), they're just really not that good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Collections Produced By Lee Perry ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- OPEN THE GATE - Lee Perry & Friends Trojan CDPRY2 Disc One: 1. Without a doubt, this is the best collection of Lee Perry's Black Ark work available. Amazing, powerful, groovy, dynamic, earth shaking. Most of the songs include dub versions, so they all range in length from 6 to 9 minutes! All of these songs are absolute killers - the ones too magnificent for words include The Heptones' apocalyptic "Babylon Falling", Eric Donaldson's Perrified version of his big hit "Cherry Oh Baby", Lee's own "Bionic Rats", and Watty Burnett's thundering "Open The Gate" - if this song doesn't give you goose bumps, nothing will. HOT TIP - Prince Django; 18. TO BE A LOVER - Shenley Duffus This, along with Open The Gate, is the coolest collection of Lee Perry's Black Ark era productions. All of the songs are killers, and all of the artists were some of the best in Perry's stable. Highlights: Neville Grant's "Sick & Tired", which will come as a shock to those of you who have loved "Return Of Django" for years - "Django" was based on a Fats Domino tune, "Sick & Tired", and this is the original cover version of it with vocals; Junior Byles' eloquently angry "Rasta No Pickpocket", and Lee Perry's heavy duty "Justice To The People". As mentioned above, the original Trojan track listing is all wrong - I was able to figure out all of the songs except track 13, which is either "Dig Your Grave" or "Ring Of Fire"; it's an instrumental, so with no vocal hints I can't tell for sure. The confusion just adds to the album's appeal! THE REGGAE COLLECTION - Various Artists Madacy CLJ-2-5609 Disc One: 1. STOP THE TRAIN - The Wailers; 2. DOUBLE SIX - U Roy; 3. Cheapskate Canadian company Madacy has done just that with this terrific 3 CD set, which is inexpensive and of surprisingly good quality. The only crappy selections are all of the Perry produced Wailers tracks; the rest is really good. All of it is so wonderfully obscure, and you can't find many of these Upsetters and Lee Perry produced songs anywhere else. Killer tracks include the haunting skank of "In The Iaah" and the berserk "Return Of The Super Ape" by The Upsetters, Roman Stewart's soulful crooning on "Live & Learn" and "Your Arms", and the little known "Throw Some Water In" and "Soul Fire" by Lee himself. Unfortunately, all of the tracks are simply credited to Perry, which isn't correct. (Performers include The Upsetters, The Wailers, Brad Osborne, et al) This CD is a combo of two old LPs, Scratch & Company and Blackboard Jungle Dub, many songs from which were scammed for The Reggae Collection (see above). All of the dubs are big, bad killers, especially the "Blackboard Jungle" dubs and "Cloak & Dagger". "Moving Forward" and "Sinsemillia Kaya Dub" are dub versions of Bob Marley's "Keep On Moving" and "Kaya". EXPLOSIVE ROCK STEADY Heartbeat CDHB72 1. PLEASE STOP YOUR LYING - Errol Dunkley; 2. RED EYE - Nicky Thomas & Delores Perry worked uncredited for greenhorn producer Joe Gibbs (who at first was just the guy with the money), and this collection contains many of Perry's first records as a producer. This album is kind of like a textbook for DJs like me: it contains the first song to use a brand new rhythm that they would eventually call "Reggae", The Pioneers' "Long Shot", which pre-dates The Maytals' "Do The Reggae" by a year. Therefore, the song is a good argument for those who claim that Lee Perry actually invented Reggae... "I Am The Upsetter" is one of Perry's seminal songs, a "screw you" rant aimed at Coxsone Dodd after he allegedly ripped Perry off. It was a big hit for Gibbs, who ironically suffered Perry's wrath for the same reasons a year later with "People Funny Boy" (see Roots Of Reggae Vol. 3 & The Reggae Train in the other section). The last killer tune on this album is The Inspirations' crazy "Take Back Your Duck", which is right up Perry's alley: it's actually about an unhappy customer asking for a refund at a whorehouse. KINGDOM OF DUB - The Upsetters; 6. BABYLON DEH PON FIRE; 7. JUNGLE FEVER - Truth Fact & Correct; 8. HYPOCRITES; 9. NINE FINGER JERRY LEWIS - Jimmy & Glen; 10. BLACK CANDLE - LEO GRAHAM; 11. BAD LAMP - The Upsetters; 12. DOCTOR DEMAND - Leo Graham; 13. BLACK BAT - The Upsetters; 14. BIG TONGUE BUSTER - Leo Graham; 15. BUS A DUB - The Upsetters; 16. HERB VENDOR - Horse Mouth; 17. PENNY REEL - Prince Jazzbo Another solid collection, perhaps the most "sinister" one available, featuring gravelly voices on top of Upsetter rhythms that alternate between deadly and silly (eg: "I'm A Dread Locks", which is a version of "Three Blind Mice"). Killers include "Public Jestering", in which Lee Perry gets put on trial, and the thundering voice of Horse Mouth on "Herb Vendor". REGGAE GREATS - Lee Perry Mango ISLCD9792 1. PARTY TIME - The Heptones; 2. POLICE & THIEVES - Junior Murvin; 3. GROOVY SITUATION - Keith Rowe; 4. SOUL FIRE - Lee Perry; 5. WAR IN A BABYLON - Max Romeo; 6. WISDOM - Jah Lion; 7. TO BE A LOVER - George Faith; 8. ROAST FISH & CORNBREAD - Lee Perry; 9. CROAKING LIZARD - Prince Jazzbo; 10. DREADLOCKS IN MOONLIGHT - Lee Perry Part of the wonderful Reggae Greats series from Mango, this is a small but tasty slice of the Lee Perry pie. Certainly not as adventurous as most other collections, but it does include ganja soaked killers like "Soul Fire", "Roast Fish & Cornbread", and the outer space DJ-ing of Prince Jazzbo on "Croaking Lizard". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Albums With Important / Cool Lee Perry Tracks ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a short list of good Reggae compilations with Lee Perry songs that are worth stepping over your mother for. You can grab them for just the Perry tracks if you're a serious collector, but they're all worth having as part of a good Reggae collection. THE ROOTS OF REGGAE (VOLUME 3) Music Club/Trojan MCCD072 PEOPLE FUNNY BOY - Lee Perry One of Lee Perry's seminal recordings, the first to show his maniac side. With a wild rhythm, machine gun guitar riffs, breaking glass, and his baby daughter Marcia crying in time to the tune, this is a real killer. The angry lyrics ("When you were down & out I used to help you out / Now that you win jackpot, you don't remember that") were aimed at Perry's old boss Joe Gibbs (see the biography) who retaliated with "People Grudgeful" (see The Reggae Train below). MONKEY BUSINESS Trojan CDTRL188 TIGHTEN UP - The Untouchables; RETURN OF DJANGO, DOLLAR IN THE TEETH - The Upsetters; SHOCKS OF MIGHTY - Dave Barker Four of Lee Perry's most successful - and grooviest - productions on an out of sight collection of classic Reggae. These are the cleanest versions of "Tighten Up" and the raucous "Shocks Of Mighty" available. The rest of the album is dynamite, too. THE REGGAE TRAIN 1968 - 1971 Trojan CDTRL261 (I AM) THE UPSETTER, KIMBLE - Lee Perry; PEOPLE GRUDGEFUL - Sir Gibbs A cool collection of music from Joe Gibbs' Amalgamated label with some associated Perry tracks: "I Am The Upsetter" and "Kimble", which is the missing link between "Upsetter" and the wild "People Funny Boy". It's a crazy song complete with breaking glass and screaming, a tribute to David Janssen's character on the famous TV show The Fugitive. "People Grudgeful" is Joe Gibbs' answer to Perry's "People Funny Boy" (see Roots of Reggae Vol. 3, above), which uses almost the same arrangement and is a surprisingly great comeback to Perry's rant ("You spit in the sky, it fall in your eye / That's no lie..."). The rest of the collection is really solid, and if you listen closely you can tell which songs were produced by Perry. PAY IT ALL BACK (VOLUME 2) On U Sound W248 TRAIN TO DOOMSVILLE - Lee Perry & The Dub Syndicate Wow, is this song ever cool! One of Perry's finest moments - he really makes the walls shake with this one. The rest of the compilation is really good as well, but "Train To Doomsville" alone is worth the admission price. The album also includes Perry collaborators such as African Headcharge and the Dub Syndicate. TOWERING DUB INFERNO ROIR RCD20152 SATAN DUB - Lee Perry Despite the sinister title, "Satan Dub" isn't that deadly, but it's still a killer. The album also features Lee Perry collaborators Mad Professor, Niney The Observer, Puls Der Zeit, and the Dub Syndicate. Wicked dubs! GROOVE YARD Mango CID1281 WAR IN A BABYLON - Max Romeo; POLICE & THIEVES - Junior Murvin; ROAST FISH & CORNBREAD - Lee Perry Three killer Lee Perry produced tracks on a terrific Reggae collection. ORIGINAL CLUB SKA Heartbeat CDHB55 BALL OF FIRE, GUNS OF NAVARONE - The Skatalites Apparently that's Lee Perry doing the whooping intros to "Ball Of Fire" and "Guns Of Navarone". If it is, then these two songs are Lee Perry's first appearances on record. If you dig Ska, this is a killer collection of Studio One material, even if it isn't him on those songs. THE MARLEY FAMILY ALBUM Heartbeat CDHB160 MANY ARE CALLED - The I Threes This is the standout track on an otherwise lukewarm collection of Bob Marley's friends and family doing their thing. Although he's only credited with "production assistance", the outer space feel of this Judy Mowatt classic has Perry written all over it. THE SINGLES - The Clash Columbia 4689462 COMPLETE CONTROL The story goes that when Perry heard The Clash's rugged cover version of Junior Murvin's "Police & Thieves" (a song that Perry co-wrote), he was so impressed that he offered to produce the band's next record, which turned out to be one of their heaviest numbers, "Complete Control". Despite its punk rock status, the 1984-ish "Complete Control" fits perfectly into the Lee Perry canon, since many of his songs have been rants about the greedy and the ungrateful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Upsetters ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE UPSETTER COLLECTION - The Upsetters & Friends Trojan CDTRL195 1. COLD SWEAT - The Upsetters; 2. RETURN OF DJANGO - The Upsetters; 3. CHECK HIM OUT - The Bleechers; 4. DJANGO SHOOTS FIRST; 5. KILL THEM ALL; 6. THE VAMPIRE; 7. DRUGS AND POISON; 8. SIPREANO; 9. BLACK I.P.A. - The Upsetters; 10. BUCKY SKANK - Lee Perry; 11. WORDS OF MY MOUTH - The Gatherers; 12. TIPPER SPECIAL - The Upsetters; 13. COW THIEF SKANK - Lee Perry & Charlie Ace; 14. FRENCH CONNECTION - The Upsetters; 15. BETTER DAYS - Carlton & His Shoes; 16. FREAK OUT SKANK - The Upsetters This is simply the best Upsetters collection you can get. It shows off the band at their weirdest ("Cow Thief Skank", "Sipreano", "Tipper Special"), their tightest ("Return Of Django"), and their grooviest ("Cold Sweat", "Drugs & Poison"). Most of the tracks are killer, and the weaker ones never fall below "not bad". UPSETTING THE NATION - The Upsetters & Friends Trojan CDTRL330 1. EIGHT FOR EIGHT; 2. OUTER SPACE - The Upsetters; 3. TO LOVE SOMEBODY - Busty Brown; 4. SOULFUL I; 5. MAN FROM MI5 - The Upsetters; 6. I'LL BE WAITING - The Termites; 7. TEN TO TWELVE - The Upsetters; 8. KIDDY O - The Muskyteers; 9. MEDICAL OPERATION; 10. NIGHT DOCTOR; 11. SELF CONTROL - The Upsetters; 12. CRYING ABOUT YOU - Busty Brown; 13. THUNDERBALL - The Upsetters; 14. BUILD MY WHOLE WORLD AROUND YOU - Dave Barker; 15. ONE PUNCH; 16. THE VAMPIRE - The Upsetters; 17. PRISONER OF LOVE; 18. I WAS WRONG - Dave Barker Another great showcase of The Upsetters' talent. Unlike the weirdo Upsetter Collection, this shows off some of Lee Perry's "hits" - in case you thought he couldn't produce a song that didn't glow in the dark. Killer tracks include "Prisoner Of Love" by the James Brown of Reggae, Dave Barker, the ear piercing "Eight For Eight", the heartbreak skank of The Termites' "I'll Be Waiting", and my personal all time favorite Reggae song, "Medical Operation". SOME OF THE BEST - Lee Perry & The Upsetters Heartbeat CDHB37 1. PEOPLE FUNNY BOY - Lee Perry; 2. DA DA - The Upsetters; 3. SHOCKS OF MIGHTY; 4. SET ME FREE - Dave Barker; 5. LIVE INJECTION; 6. FREEDOM TRAIN - The Upsetters; 7. FINGER MASH - Lee Perry & The Silvertones; 8. DUPPY CONQUEROR - The Wailers; 9. UPSETTING STATION - Dave Barker; 10. THE THANKS WE GET - Junior Byles & Omar Perry; 11. FU MAN VERSION - Linval Thompson; 12. KISS ME NECK; 13. KEEP ON SKANKING - The Upsetters Yes, this really is some of the best! This makes part three of a great Upsetter trilogy, along with Upsetting The Nation and Upsetter Collection. This stuff is rather rare, and so Heartbeat had to master quite a few from scratchy records. But who cares when the music's this cool though? You get to hear both sides of the great Dave Barker with his shouter "Shocks Of Mighty", then change gears and head into his ballad "Set Me Free". Other killers include "Freedom Train", a Sam & Dave-esque soul number, and the crazy "Da Da" - a suitable title for the Salvador Dali of Reggae, Lee Perry. VERSION LIKE RAIN - Various Artists with The Upsetters Trojan CDTRL278 Musical Shower: 1. WANT A WINE - Leo Graham; 2. STICK TOGETHER - U Roy; 3. DOUBLE WINE - The Upsetters; Fever Storm: 4. FEVER - Junior Byles; 5. HOT & COLD VERSION - Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters; 6. THIS WORLD - Milton Henry; 7. FEVER - Susan Cadogan; 8. INFLUENZA VERSION - The Upsetters; Babylon Deluge: 9. BEAT DOWN BABYLON - Junior Byles; 10. INFORMER MAN - Junior Byles & Jah T; 11. OUTFORMER VERSION - The Upsetters; 12. BABYLON'S BURNING - Max Romeo, Niney & Lee Perry; 13. BEAT VERSION - The Upsetters; 14. FREEDOM FIGHTER - Bunny & Ricky; 15. IRON WOLF - The Upsetters; 16. BET YOU DON'T KNOW - Shenley Duffus This is for serious Lee Perry / Upsetters fans or Reggaeologists only, but it's an interesting album. It's common practice in Reggae to use rhythm tracks more than once with different vocals to create new songs, and this album lays that practice on you. All of the "Musical Shower" tracks use the "Want A Wine" rhythm, "Fever Storm" uses "Fever", and "Babylon Deluge" is all "Beat Down Babylon". It's a surprisingly great album for one that (technically) only has three songs on it! Susan Cadogan's sexy version of "Fever" is a killer, as are all of the "Beat Down Babylon" versions. THE UPSETTERS A GO GO - The Upsetters Heartbeat CDHB136 1. UPSETTERS A GO GO; 2. GRAVE YARD BULLY; 3. NO JOKE; 4. LOCK IT UP; 5. WHAT ABOUT AFRICA; 6. ZANG ZANG ZAY; 7. MOVE ONE WAY; 8. SOUL CONSTITUTION; 9. X RAY VISION; 10. CYPRIANO; 11. LOOKING DREAD; 12. MAMA I LOVE YOU; 13. RED OR RED; 14. RISE AND SHINE; 15. MELLOW MOOD; 16. TAN YAH Despite the terrific sounding titles and the fact that this is a collection of rare Upsetter tracks restored and re-mixed by Glen Adams (Perry wasn't involved), this album is somewhat of a dud. It's almost worth owning for the picture of the band on the cover, though! "Sipreano" gets the remix treatment here as "Cypriano", but for some crazy reason Adams cut out the cinematic Lee Perry intro about "counting your chickens", which is the best part of the song! If you've become enamoured with The Upsetters, pick this up - otherwise, it's like missing the meal and having to eat leftovers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Wailers ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- WARNING! There are more cheapskate collections of Lee Perry-produced Wailers songs out there than you can shake a stick at. Not all of the "I"s were dotted and all of the "T"s were crossed when it came to copywriting these songs, so it means that anyone with access to the right records and the right machinery can bang out a CD and make some dosh with a generic "Bob Marley's Greatest Hits" compilation. It's not 100% illegal due to the right loopholes, but the artists see absolutely none of the money, which is a crime that Lee Perry has hurled thunderbolts at on many occasions! Almost any Bob Marley album with the following songs that's not listed here is most likely of dubious quality. So if you're after some of this music, be warned! SOON COME Greycliff 900001/2 Disc One: 1. SOUL SHAKEDOWN PARTY; 2. LIVELY UP YOURSELF; 3. RIDING HIGH *; 4. IT'S ALRIGHT *; 5. REACTION *; 6. MY CUP *; 7. CAN'T YOU SEE; 8. NO WATER *; 9. SOUL CAPTIVES ( * Produced by Lee Perry ) If you can find it, this is the greatest collection of The Wailers late 1960's / early 70's work. It contains the majority of the Perry-produced Wailers songs, along with productions by Leslie Kong and The Wailers. All of them are beautifully mastered and unlike the original Perry mixes (see Soul Revolution below), play in undivided mono. All of the songs are bonafide killers - some of Bob Marley's finest moments, and a real "ear-opener" for anyone who has only heard Marley's later (and some would say inferior) work on Island records. BOB MARLEY IN MEMORIAM Trojan CDTAL400 CD One: 1. SOUL SHAKEDOWN PARTY; 2. SOON COME; 3. CHEER UP; 4. STOP THE TRAIN; 5. CAUTION; 6. SOUL REBEL *; 7. CORNER STONE *; 8. REACTION *; 9. 400 YEARS *; 10. SOUL REBEL (VERSION 4) *; 11. DUPPY CONQUEROR *; 12. DON'T ROCK MY BOAT *; 13. KAYA *; 14. BRAIN WASHING *; 15. STAND ALONE * CD Two: 1. MR. BROWN *; 2. AFRICAN HERBSMAN *; 3. FUSSING & FIGHTING *; 4. SUN IS SHINING *; 5. KEEP ON MOVING *; 6. LIVELY UP YOURSELF; 7. THANK YOU LORD; 8. TRENCHTOWN ROCK; 9. MR. CHATTERBOX; 10. WISDOM; 11. SMALL AXE *; 12. ALL IN ONE *; 13. TURN ME LOOSE; 14. JAH IS MIGHTY; 15. KEEP ON SKANKING ( * Produced by Lee Perry ) Along with Soon Come (see above), this is certainly the best collection of The Wailers' work from the Lee Perry era. As mentioned above, most if not all of these songs are killers and some of The Wailers' finest moments. Besides the Perry-produced tracks, this features great songs produced by Leslie Kong ("Soul Shakedown Party", "Caution"), and many of the tunes The Wailers produced themselves ("Trenchtown Rock", "Lively Up Yourself"). AFRICAN HERBSMAN Trojan CDTRL62 1. LIVELY UP YOURSELF #; 2. SMALL AXE; 3. DUPPY CONQUEROR; 4. TRENCHTOWN ROCK #; 5. AFRICAN HERBSMAN; 6. KEEP ON MOVING; 7. FUSSING & FIGHTING; 8. STAND ALONE; 9. ALL IN ONE; 10. DON'T ROCK THE BOAT; 11. PUT IT ON; 12. SUN IS SHINING; 13. KAYA; 14. RIDING HIGH; 15. BRAIN WASHING; 16. 400 YEARS ( # Produced by The Wailers ) Probably the best single album from the Lee Perry era. All killers, no fillers. "Small Axe" is certainly the signature tune of the Perry / Marley collaboration; "Fussing & Fighting" features one of the deadliest rhythms ever; "African Herbsman" is a quiet masterpiece. If only it included "Mr. Brown", this would be 100% gold! RASTA REVOLUTION Trojan CDTRL89 1. MR. BROWN; 2. SOUL REBEL; 3. TRY ME; 4. IT'S ALRIGHT; 5. NO SYMPATHY; 6. MY CUP; 7. DUPPY CONQUEROR; 8. REBEL'S HOP; 9. CORNER STONE; 10. 400 YEARS; 11. NO WATER; 12. REACTION; 13. SOUL ALMIGHTY Another solid album. Killers include the spooky "Mr. Brown", the out of sight "It's Alright", the romantic "Corner Stone", and the funky "Soul Almighty", in which Bob sings about funky chickens and mashed potatoes (!!!) SOUL REVOLUTION 1 & 2 Trojan CDTRD406 Disc One: 1. KEEP ON MOVING; 2. DON'T ROCK MY BOAT; 3. PUT IT ON; 4. FUSSING AND FIGHTING; 5. DUPPY CONQUEROR; 6. MEMPHIS; 7. SOUL REBEL; 8. RIDING HIGH; 9. KAYA; 10. AFRICAN HERBSMAN; 11. STAND ALONE; 12. SUN IS SHINING; 13. BRAIN WASHING; 14. MR. BROWN Disc Two (The Rhythm Album): Same track listing as above, only instrumental. This double set combines The Wailers' second album for Perry and its instrumental counterpart, originally released in a very limited edition. Most listeners might be put off by Perry's unusual mix of the vocal tracks on the first disc - vocals in the right channel, music in the left - but this weird mix (and especially the rhythm album) emphasizes the outstanding musicianship of The Upsetters. Killers include the rumbling "Fussing & Fighting", one of The Wailers' finest moments, the gentle "African Herbsman", and the spooky "Mr. Brown", a song written by Glen Adams that is perhaps the single best song to come out of the Perry-produced Wailers sessions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
