The Harder They Come - Michael Thelwell

Reggae - The Rough Guide
Steve Barrow and Peter Dalton
This expanded and updated new edition of The Rough Guide to Reggae covers the entire span of recorded music in Jamaica, from 1950s mento and R&B through to dancehall and ragga, giving you the full story of ska, rocksteady, roots, dub, toasting, and lover’s rock, as well as reggae’s offshoots in Britain, the US and Africa. The book takes its focus from the singers and DJs, the equally important producers and session musicians and the sound systems. Througout, there are interviews and features on the major artists, and reviews of hundreds of discs – both on CD and vinyl. Rough Guides Ltd

"Bob Marley" by Stephen Davis. 1990 Revised Edition. Published by Schenkman Books, Inc (802-767-3702). ISBN: 0-87047-044-2 (pbk) $15.95 A rebel, a visionary, an uncompromising champion of human rights-Robert Nesta Marley rose from the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, to make reggae music and his own message of rebellion, self-determination, and the power of the individual a spiritual and political force through-out the world. The author of the highly acclaimed "Reggae Bloodlines" has created an intimate portrait of the charismatic artist through interviews with those closest to Marley and with Marley himself, including the last one before his tragic death in the spring of 1981. The Wailers' recording sessions, concerts, and life at 56 Hope Road, Marley's residence, are all part of a sensitive, authoritative, and authentic look at the king of a musical movement that swept out of Jamaica and into Western and Third World countries alike.

marc griffiths
s.t. publishing, po box 12, dunoon, argyll pa23 7bq, scotland
8.95 pounds

don't be put off by the title! this is a must for fans of 70s reggae. 160 beautifully presented pages that document every known uk reggae label between 1967 and 1973 (all 139), every known uk/ja producer and all the record shops that sold reggae at the time. lots of excellent b&w photos, lots of label photos, and some newspaper adverts and record company publicity from the time. griffiths really knows his stuff and puts on record a lot of the facts about the uk reggae scene that i've never seen written up elsewhere. i found this today by chance in london's new (and only) music bookshop (helter skelter, 4 denmark street, wc2) - i haven't read it all yet but i recommend it thoroughly. while i was in the shop, someone came in looking for a copy of (deleted) "reggae bloodlines". it's a great place for the music fanatic.

A Rastafari View Of Marcus Mosiah Garvey by I Jabulani Tafari
A valuable new addition to the body of work on Jamaica's most famous philosopher and activist, Marcus Garvey. This well written, well organized book assembles historical information on Garvey and the rise and fall of the UNIA within the parameters of a Rastafari view of African history. This book should be of interest to schools, colleges and all those who want to improve their understanding of contemporary black history, and the role played by Marcus Garvey.
This review was taken from the weekly Gleaner Dec. 15 - 21. 1995.
